School Council

Back to School

Welcome to the ACES School Council Website!

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020-2021 school year began with delay, as did the organization of our school council. Undoubtedly, some of our regular school council activities and meetings will look, feel, and be different this year. However, our focus remains to support and enhance the student experience here at ACES in as safe a way as possible.

Who We Are

ACES emblem

Together, we are an association of parents/guardians, teachers, and community members dedicated to supporting and improving student learning at Adrienne Clarkson Elementary School. School Council is a valuable home/school link that supports the learning environment of our students. As an advisory body, the ACES School Council achieves its goals by maintaining a school-wide focus and providing advice to the principal, vice principal, and school board on significant education issues, and by planning activities that support the active participation of parents/guardians and our wonderful ACES Community.

School Council meetings are open forums for all ACES parents/guardians (regardless of whether their students are attending school in-person or virtually) who would like to gain firsthand insight and have a voice in what's happening at ACES. The principal and a staff member report on staffing, field trips, sports and cultural activities, scheduling changes, etc. We discuss what our school Board and Provincial Government are doing that will impact our children’s education, and what can be done about it. Under regular school operations, we invite guest speakers on different subjects and topics of relevance and interest (ie: appropriate use of technology, well-being). We raise money for extra school activities, library books, sports equipment and science projects. And in the process we get to know each other better!

By participating in ACES School Council, we can help discover new and exciting ways to contribute to the education of students in our school. Education is a partnership involving parents, students, teachers, principals, school boards, government, and the community. Our involvement in the School Council gives us the opportunity to strengthen that partnership, and to be part of a dedicated team working to support a high quality of education and an accountable education.

The main purpose of school councils is to work towards the improvement of student achievement and to enhance communication between the school and the school community. This is accomplished by making recommendations to our school principal and the school district on significant education issues, and by planning activities that support the active participation of parents/guardians and our school community.

School Councils are advisory organizations, mandated by the Ministry of Education, and make recommendations to the principal and School Board when appropriate. All schools in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board should have an advisory school council to help increase communication between schools and their communities and to serve the needs of students. A school council liaises through the school principal and is an important link between parents and the school community. Find out more about school councils by reading the OCDSB’s fact sheet on school councils.
