Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Adrienne Clarkson staff follows the guidelines set out in the Ontario curriculum documents and the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Student Assessment Evaluation (P.083.CUR and PR. 584.CUR). Student achievement is assessed according to four categories- Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication and Application. Literacy skills are tracked throughout the year using the Early Literacy Observation Tool in SK and PM Benchmarks, La trousse d’evaluation GB+ and/or CASI in older grades. Grade 3 and 6 students participate in the provincial assessment of reading, writing and mathematics (EQAO).

A progress report issued in November provides parents with feedback on their child’s learning skills and general progress. Student work is evaluated and reported in February and June on the provincial report card using letter grades. Student in SK receive a report card with anecdotal comments in February and June while JK students receive a June report.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

The ACES staff continues to review data, refine instructional practices and endeavour to engage all our students. As we continue to strive to maintain high achievement levels, an overarching theme of our work together this school year is to close the gap for our struggling learners. Using a variety of data, a School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement (SIPSA) is developed annually. In the past year, the plan focused on embedding critical thinking across the curriculum. Building on this work, we are now engaged in developing learning tasks that promote the ability of students to explore concepts from different perspectives. A heightened awareness and appreciation of different cultural perspectives is included in the 2013-14 SIPSA plan.

In 2012-13, all junior students completed the Tell Them From Me survey while primary students completed a school developed survey. This school climate information has informed the work of the Safe and Caring committee and fostered the development of new initiatives. A grade 4 orientation day was successful in building community, especially with the 70 new members of our school. Leadership training is underway for the Peacemakers and PAL programs and the entire school is examining ways to recognize and embrace our cultural diversity.

We are proud of receiving a Bronze certification for our eco-school initiatives. Continued work on reducing waste will be a focus this school year. A litterless lunch program is in place and students are encouraged to bring reusable containers for their lunches in order to support the recycling program.
