Leadership Recognition

Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

This year, our students will again raise funds for various charitable causes. Through our Student Council, participants have opportunities to benefit from leadership. We encourage the older students to model positive interactions for their younger peers. Students also show leadership in sports and in their participation in leadership initiatives such as the Lunch Monitor Program, Bus Helpers, and Class Buddies. Their contributions are regularly acknowledged and celebrated in a number of contexts such as announcements, assemblies, newsletters, Board-wide awards and entries in community newspapers. In June 2013 we were delighted when a grade 4/5 class won first place in a national competition, Take it Outside, for a video promoting outdoor play.

Staff

Staff members continually update their learning to reflect current research and direction in education. This is encouraged and supported by the Annual Learning Plan and participation in professional development opportunities. Two teachers have recently been involved in a pilot project using iPads that has been leading the way for continued study. An innovative partnership with our high school partner, resulted in yard improvements that harnessed the creativity of both our young children and senior art students. Kindergarten teachers and Early Childhood Educators are broadening their skills as they implement an inquiry based full day learning program. Other staff members served as ‘human libraries’ in the Rainbow Youth forum this fall. We acknowledge our staff’s expertise, professionalism and leadership by encouraging further opportunities for professional growth and by celebrating successes. This year we celebrated a teacher who was awarded the Curriculum Development Award sponsored by the Elementary Teachers of Ontario. Collectively we are proud to have received the Welcoming School award presented by the Occasional Teachers Federation.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

School Council meets monthly and is actively engaged in providing input on various school matters. A council website has been established to communicate with the wider school community. A strong tradition of organizing ‘spirit’ events for ACES families continues to be a focus of council. Additionally, fundraising activities have supported the subsidizing of field trips, Scientists in the School presentations and technology purchases. Volunteers have included parents, grandparents, alumni, co-op students and other community partners. We appreciate the contributions of all and recognize their work in newsletters, through notes of thanks and at an annual breakfast.

Community

The school participates in Cleaning the Capital and parents, staff and students have worked together to enhance our environment by greening our school yard and fundraising for a natural play area. Successful fundraising for charities such as Toy Mountain, Parkinson’s Pass the Baton, MS Readathon, Barrhaven Food Bank, Sens Foundation and a Kenyan Orphanage exemplify the generosity of our school community.
